One has dog aggression issues and a hatred for all types of delivery trucks, one is hyper and crazy-active, one starts barking like crazy if the other two get worked up. Mix all this with some idiot neighbors who sometimes let their dogs run loose. Walking all three together ended in pure chaos at least 50% of the time. Next, mix in one dog with an ACL injury who needs severely restricted and controlled exercise and I ended up finding myself taking three dogs on three separate walks each day plus trying to squeeze in a run on many of those days as well. It only made sense to try to consolidate some things together a few days during the week.
First up, my in-house inventory of potential running partners:
![]() |
Who wants to run?
Potential Running Partner #1 - Lab Mix, estimated age 8-9 yrs. but no one really knows. Known as Jackson, J, JJ, Big Boy, Old Boy and Gramps. Adopted six years ago. The biggest fan of the daily walk. Prefers routines and schedules. Will try to kill other dogs, particularly golden retrievers, if not introduced in a very structured way. Will attack whatever is closest to him if the UPS truck drives by. Has many other quirks and seems to be growing more and more into the old man who is just a bit lost in his own little world.
Potential Running Partner #2 - Beagle, estimated age 7-8 yrs but no one really knows. Known as Kasey, Kase, White Boots, Booty and Maria. The second adopted, about five years ago. Not a fan of exercise, prefers sleeping and eating.
Potential Running Partner #3 - Lab/Pit/Dobie Mix? Who knows. Estimated Age - 3 years, most of which was spent in an animal shelter. Known as Hannah, Nanner, Banana and Morgan. Adopted seven months ago. Can be a terror.
Kasey automatically gets knocked out of the picture. She won't run. I tried a long time ago. It just doesn't work with a beagle...or at least this beagle. Plus, she has a bum leg. So, she's the cool-down girl. She gets her short, modified walk after the other two get their exercise. Luckily, her cuteness can make up for her lack of interest in exercise. She used to be a nightmare to control as well, the cuteness got her over those hurdles too.
Sleeping is how she spends most of the day

Trying to obtain food fills the other half.

I hate you people, stop laughing at me.
Next up, Hannah. The natural. I've run with her since we brought her home from the shelter. She needs it, desperately. She either needs a run with me or a long session of fetch each day to make her manageable. Somedays though, it is frustrating to run with her and I'd rather just have a calm, relaxing run by myself. She's tripped me, on more than one occasion. The first minute or so is usually bad until she gets into a rhythm. If I take her, I have limited routes because I don't want to take her where there is any traffic. But, it's good for her and um...those problems aren't really problems. I'll stop whining.

My system is warm-up with Jackson for up to 1-2 miles, swap out, anything up to 6 miles with Hannah (she could definitely do more, I just can't stand making my immediate neighborhood loops any longer than that), swap out, and a quick cool-down with Kasey.
Workout complete - dog walks complete. It's a win win!

You are a trooper having three dogs to walk! I admit I can be bad for taking Chloe on a daily walk. We usually get in 4 solid walks a week and the other 3 days we end up playing fetch in the park behind our house. It's harder this time of year too since it gets dark so early!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I love doing with Chloe is taking her to the off-leash trails near our house since then she gets WAY more exercise as she sprints and bounds around. Do you have off-leash trails near you anywhere? That's also the ONLY place I run with her since she's still too young to run on a leash and at the off-leash trails she can set her own pace!
Sounds like you found a routine that will work for everyone! I've been promising to start running with my dog more - still have to work on the potential tripping issues.
ReplyDeleteI can totally feel all the love you have for these pups by the way you write about them. Plus, you manage to walk three dogs - to me, that's a huge accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteI'm so impressed that you run with even one of those guys! My dogs are too little to ever run with me, but sometimes I do wish I could combine the dog walk/run thing. It gets old pretty quick!
ReplyDeleteIt's like you have a dog for every type of run you need! That is cool :)
ReplyDeleteI love how they all have separate nicknames. We have a zillion (exaggerating) nicknames for our cat. I wonder if we had two cats if we would use different nicknames.
All your pups are so cute!
Ah, I'd want to take them all at once! But clearly not a solution, huh? How cool that you have so many options.
ReplyDeleteWe have a huge contingent of dogs here in my neighborhood and we all walk them when we walk the kids to school in the morning. The doggy drama some days is hilarious!
Dogs are the best! Yours are adorable! :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous post, I enjoyed every sentence; big dog runner myself, currently running with two Boxers (half brothers) on a split leash. It is an adventure, every time...
ReplyDeleteCute, cute, cute! I wish I could run with my dogs, but bassets are more of the "trotter" types. I've always wondered what it would be like to walk/run 3 dogs at once. I can barely walk our two ill-behaved dogs together. Happy running with the pups! :)
ReplyDeleteNew to your blog...love the pics of your dogs!!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I so miss having a dog. My cats aren't interested in running with us.
ReplyDeleteI consider myself to be somewhat experienced in the dog running field, so I'll give you my two cents. :)
ReplyDeletePeanut used to be horrible to walk or run. The only thing that saved it was strict, strict discipline. Peanut isn't allowed to do the following unless I give her permission:
Sniff the ground
Stop
Pee/poop
Be in any other stop than at my left side
If it sounds like I'm some sort of dog training nazi, it's because I am.
Also, maybe reconsider your restraint system with Hannah. I see that she has a harness and that actually encourages pulling. Maybe a Gentle Lead? I personally use a prong collar with Peanut, but we didn't start with that until she was at the point of listening and not trying to bolt from me.
My offer to trade you Peanut for the sleepy beagle still stands. :)
I 100% agree /w Kara. Rex isn't allowed to do any of those things even on walk unless I give the "ok" I use "wandering" as a reward for after a long run or walk then I say ok and let him smell the ground. On a run the dog has to feel 3 things in order for it to be successful:
ReplyDelete1. it has to feel SUBMISSIVE to you = you're the leader! the head honcho
2. it has to feel like it HAS A JOB! - the run is like the hunt, everything right down to when I turn a corner is dictated by me to Rex
3. they have to feel - part of a pack.
if I had that many dogs I'd probably master the walk with each one of them THEN whoever is the best behaved could be a role model for the others.
Also b/c of the difference in energy levels and age I'd suggest picking a route close to home and using one dog as your warm up partner, one as the workout and the other as the cool down ;)
Sometimes when I go on longer runs I only do 2-4miles /w Rex then swing back to my place and drop him off and continue my run. OR vice versa, I start alone and pick him up when I'm cooling down.
Good luck! you've got a full house!
OH and for the younger one (in the summer) try roller blading or biking /w her first and then she sould be at the same energy level as the rest of the PACK :D
I just fell in love with ALL of your dogs! So adorable!
ReplyDeleteOMG, soo cute!!! I guess you have no excuse not to run :) I have a small dog and wish he would be able to run longer distances. For now we can do 1 mile.
ReplyDeleteAdorable pups!
ReplyDeleteWhat great running partners? www.dashingdiva.net
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to get to know your running partners. They are all so cute! I kind of wish I had a neighbor with a dog that I could run with. I don't want one of my own, but would like to borrow one occasionally!
ReplyDeleteHi thank you for your comment on my blog!!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to have a doggie to run with!! I like your idea of swapping the dogs out, because I have a malitpoo and a cockapoo that could each run 3-miles...I might give it a try I have patience one day next week! :)
xoxo!
Those pups are adorable!
ReplyDeleteI love your puppies (maybe not puppies, but always puppies)! I wish I could borrow one or two for an after dark run.
ReplyDeleteYour dogs are adorable!!
ReplyDeleteAwwwwww we have a beagly beag too! He is horrible for running (hubs has tried) He wants to follow his nose and piddle on stuff. Then we have a beagle/dach (we think? shelter puppy) who we socialized with other dogs but not people (whoops, we didn't know) so she barks/growls at everyone but runs away if you walk near her.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to run with a dog... I secretly want to get a Weimaraner, I've heard they're great running dogs.
ReplyDeleteI am totally a cat person, but your dogs are adorable. I would love to run with a dog. I'm hoping that when the time is right we get a dog that wants a running partner :)
ReplyDeleteI freaking am an even BIGGER fan of you!! Love that you have helped saved the lives of dogs! You inspire me! My Cooper needs a buddy and I am going to ADOPT!
ReplyDeleteGreat workout and treat for your fur children!
Wow! That sounds like a lot of work! How many dogs do you actually have?! I think I lost track! Also noteworthy - my husband walked by the computer while I was reading this post and jealously stated that he likes dogs.
